Synopsis

An estranged son, Cody, is reunited with his abusive father, Avery, when Avery is diagnosed with terminal cancer and requires live-in care. Avery, if anything, treats his son worse than before. Cody works out his anger and pain by rebuilding the car his mother was killed in. As Avery struggles with thoughts of suicide, Cody tries to forgive him for years of abuse and for driving drunk one night two years ago and leaving him without a mother.

Everything changes when Avery is rushed to the hospital, coughing up blood and unable to breathe. Avery finally sees that he has been given a second chance to be a good father to, and Cody meets the girl, Perla, that he will come to love.

Life continues to improve over the next few months until Avery is told the cancer has spread to his brain, where it has deposited an inoperable tumor. Terrified of an even more futile and pathetic existence, and of being an even greater burden to his son, Avery attempts to shoot himself on the very day he was to learn that he would soon be a grandfather. His hand slips on the first shot and though injured, Avery does not die. Cody rushes inside upon hearing the gunshot, and is accidentally shot in the throat by his father. Avery pulls the trigger one final time, blowing the tumor and his life out the back of his head. Perla has a miscarriage while administering first aid, but manages to save Cody’s life.

After his father’s funeral, Cody destroys the car he has worked so hard to rebuild, recognizing it at last as the coping mechanism it had become. Despite everything, Cody and Perla stay together. They know they have each other, and for them, for now, that is enough.
